One in five of us lives with mental illness and 1 in 17 lives with a severe mental illness like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Yet, we are reluctant to speak out and shine a light on the horrible state of treatment, crisis services and support. We are in the shadows making it easy for those in power to invest in other programs–parks, greenways, libraries, affordable housing, law enforcement and other public services. Most often, it’s when a rare but horribly violent event occurs that people even think about people living with mental illness.
