NAMI Wake embraces the philosophy of recovery. According to the Surgeon General’s 2000 report, “Instead of focusing primarily on symptom relief, as the medical model dictates, recovery casts a much wider spotlight on restoration of self-esteem and identity and on attaining meaningful roles in society.”
NAMI Wake is a membership organization and an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and NAMI NC. Member dues are distributed among the three (3) levels of the organization: NAMI Wake, NAMI NC and NAMI. Each organization is a separate 501(c)(3) and engages in separate fundraising and program activities. NAMI Wake offers state-level and national NAMI programs, and develops our own services as needed.
NAMI Wake is the only organization that advocates for public policies that further the services and quality of life specifically for Wake County residents with mental illness and their families. NAMI Wake adopts those state-level and national policies, and establishes and conducts separate advocacy initiatives as needed.
